Drumsticks at the extremes
This site exists because of one pair of drumsticks I could not find.
I wanted to play quietly in a small room: something thin, but not short. And no shop would let me filter by diameter and length. Brand and price, yes. Millimetres, no. Size names are no help either — nobody defines what 5A or 7A measures (see what 5A actually means). So I opened product pages one at a time and copied the numbers into a spreadsheet.
That spreadsheet became STICK FINDER. This article is the thing I wanted back then: what sits at the edges of the database. Along the way it needed one new measurement — a way to put a number on “thin, but long”.
1. Edge to edge, at one scale
The thinnest, the Promark SH516, measures ⌀7.9 mm (.311″). The thickest, the Vater VHTKBW, is ⌀24.1 mm — 3.1 times the diameter. Length is far tamer: 444 mm against 325 mm, a ratio of 1.37. Thickness multiplies; length barely stretches by a third. That asymmetry says a lot about what a drumstick is.

The weight rows need a footnote. Most makers do not publish a weight at all: only 154 sticks (7%, 7 brands) of the 2,110 on file carry one. So “heaviest” means heaviest among the makers that tell you. Within those 154, the range runs from 29.0 g to 199.5 g — 6.9 times from end to end.
2. Slenderness — putting a number on “thin but long”
Here is the part that needed inventing.
Filter for thin sticks and you get short ones too. Most thin sticks are timbale sticks or kids' models, and those are short. What I wanted was thin and long, and filtering the two dimensions separately never surfaces it.
So divide: length ÷ diameter. Both are in millimetres, so the units cancel and what is left is a plain number. Call it the slenderness ratio. Higher means thinner for its length. The ordinary pair at the top of the illustration — Wincent W-5A, ⌀14.3 × 406 mm — scores 28.4.
Across 2,095 sticks the ratio has a median of 27.8, with half of everything between 26.6 and 28.8. Set that against diameters spanning 3.1× and it is a remarkably narrow band. When a stick gets thicker it also gets longer, and the ratio holds still. That unwritten rule is shared across 38 brands that never agreed on anything else.

What fills that top ten tells you what the measure is sensitive to: Drum set 5, Other 5. Only 5 of them are drumset sticks; the rest are timbale sticks and other tools built for a different job. Count extremes and the categories skew — which is why the breakdown is printed rather than glossed over.
Narrow it to drumset sticks and the winner among 1,800 is Meinl SB142 (NANO STICK), at 46.3 — ⌀9.5 × 440 mm. The drumset median is 28.0, so this one stands clean off the end of the scale. Ask for ⌀9.5 mm or thinner and 440 mm or longer and exactly one stick out of the 2,095 with both dimensions published comes back.
That is almost certainly the pair I was hunting for. And the way I was looking, I was never going to find it — filter for thin and it hides among short sticks; filter for long and it hides among thick ones. It only appears once 38 brands sit in one table and somebody does a division.
The other end deserves a mention. The stubbiest stick on file is Vater VHTKBW at 16.8 — ⌀24.1 × 406 mm. Top to bottom, the ratio spans 3.0×, and everything ever made sits inside it.
3. The oddities shelf
After the edges, the outliers.
Outside the big three. Excluding hickory, maple and oak leaves 228 sticks with a published material — some of them wood, some of them not.

Notice how each non-wood material belongs to essentially one brand: 40 of the 42 aluminium sticks are Ahead, and all 36 carbon sticks are Techra. Leaving wood behind is not a product decision so much as a whole company's position.
Sticks with no tip. 10 models from 6 brands have no bead at the end, or are published as tipless (CANOPUS CP-TKS2, CANOPUS CP-TT, LERNI S-140LW, Meinl SB142, PLAYWOOD PM-S706C, PLAYWOOD PM-S706N and others). No bead means no narrowed contact point, which changes how a cymbal answers.
The smallest kids' model. 49 sticks from 13 brands are published for children, with a median length of 390 mm. The smallest is Millenium Junior Sticks Hickory Blue at ⌀12.0 × 325 mm — 81 mm shorter than an ordinary pair. Different hands, different tool.
4. The small print on every “most”
Every superlative here is bounded by what makers publish. Three caveats.
- Unpublished means uncounted. 12 sticks have no published diameter and 3 no published length; only 7% carry a weight. The honest phrasing is not “the thinnest drumstick in the world” but “the thinnest of the 2,098 sticks whose diameter is published”.
- Mix the categories and the categories decide. The thickest sticks are marching and taiko-adjacent; the thinnest are timbale sticks; only 5 of the top 10 by slenderness are drumset sticks. That is why the breakdown appears each time rather than being smoothed away.
- Estimated weights are not measurements. They come from published dimensions and material density, treating the last 100 mm as a cone, and ignore lacquer, drilling and tube construction. Where a published weight exists, it always wins.
5. The edges explain the middle
Back to that ratio: median 27.8, half of everything between 26.6 and 28.8. 38 brands, no shared standard, and they converge anyway. Not because they copy each other, I suspect, but because a stick you swing has a right proportion, and everyone finds it. You only see how narrow the middle is once you have walked to both edges.
And because the middle is narrow, the sticks that leave it mean something. Whoever drew ⌀9.5 × 440 mm was stretching the ratio to 46 to buy quietness without losing reach. There was nowhere to go looking for a stick like that. So this is that place.

About these numbers
- What was counted: the 2,110 drumsticks in STICK FINDER, from 38 brands. The slenderness ratio needs both dimensions, so it is computed over the 2,095 sticks that publish each.
- Slenderness ratio = length (mm) ÷ diameter (mm). The units cancel, so the number is the same in inches. It is defined here for this article; it is not industry terminology.
- Weights are reported separately for published figures and estimates. An estimate is the volume of a cylinder plus a 100 mm cone at the tip, multiplied by an effective density for the material. It is not a measurement.
- Ties are resolved by brand, then part number, then record ID, so the same stick wins every build.
- The outlines in the illustration come from the same drawing code as the search screen and the model pages — nothing was redrawn for the article.
