How to choose your first pair of drumsticks
Drumsticks come in thousands of variations, a tenth of a millimetre apart. You do not need to compare all of them to buy your first pair.
Here is the answer first. When in doubt, pick something between ⌀14.0 and 15.1 mm, and between 400 and 413 mm long. That band holds 804 of the 1,800 drumset sticks on file (45%) — and 43% of 2,311 documented professional choices as well. The middle of the market and the sticks professionals actually hold are in the same place.
The rest of this article explains where that band comes from and what to look at inside it. It does not recommend a model. The last section explains why.
1. Where “normal” is
The count covers 1,800 drumset sticks from 36 brands; marching and concert models are excluded, since they are longer and thicker for reasons that have nothing to do with your first pair. Their median is ⌀14.5 mm × 406 mm.
The band is not a hunch. The diameter range is the interquartile range of those 1,800 sticks: a quarter of them are thinner than 14.0 mm, a quarter thicker than 15.1 mm, and the middle half is exactly this. For length the interquartile range came out absurdly narrow — 406–413 mm — so the lower edge was widened to 400 mm, a round figure common among Japanese brands. 400–413 mm covers 68% of the sticks.
Length has an even blunter answer. 586 sticks — 33% — are exactly 406 mm. The most common lengths, with how many sticks use each, are 406 mm (586), 413 mm (135), 419 mm (121). 406 mm is 16 inches, 413 mm is 16 1/4 and 419 mm is 16 1/2. Length is essentially “sixteen inches, give or take”, and it is not worth agonising over on a first pair.
2. Where the professionals are
From the artist rosters the makers themselves publish, this site holds 2,311 documented choices across 640 models. Their median is ⌀14.7 mm × 406 mm, and 51% of them are exactly 406 mm long.
That figure is skewed, and the skew is worth stating up front: 67% of the 2,311 choices come from Vater's roster, because brands that publish thorough artist lists get counted more heavily. So here is the same number, counted two other ways.
- Without Vater: 768 choices, median ⌀14.9 mm, 40% inside the band.
- Counting models rather than drummers: 640 models, median ⌀15.0 mm, 36% inside the band.
However you count, the median lands between ⌀14.7 and 15.0 mm — inside the band every time. That is what makes the band worth trusting: it does not depend on how the counting is done.
There is a surprise in there too. The professional median is thicker than the median of the catalogue (⌀14.5 mm against ⌀14.7–15.0 mm), which is the opposite direction to the usual “start thin” advice. Reading that as “thicker is better” would be a stretch — drummers who need volume on stage are also the ones who end up on rosters. What the data supports is narrower: there is no evidence here that thinner is the beginner's choice.
3. What each of the four numbers changes
A drumstick only has four numbers. Briefly, what each one does.
Diameter. The one that matters most. Going from 14.0 mm to 15.1 mm — the two edges of the band — increases the cross-section by 16%, because area goes with the square of the diameter, and in the same wood the weight follows roughly along with it. Thicker means volume and durability; thinner means speed and detail. Decide it by the volume you need rather than by the size of your hands.
Length. In practice 406 mm, with only a few alternatives. Longer means a faster tip and more reach, and it feels heavier for it. When in doubt, 406 mm.
Tip shape. 1,141 sticks state one, across 9 shapes — most commonly Acorn 277, Oval 257, Teardrop 223, Ball 173. The difference shows up on cymbals far more than on drums, so it is not worth worrying about on a first pair. Each shape is explained on the search screen.
Material. 1,306 of the 1,703 drumset sticks with a stated material are hickory. The wood does not decide the thickness — it is the dial that changes the weight of a given thickness: maple lighter, oak and hornbeam heavier (→ the wood article).
4. Common questions
Hickory or maple for a beginner?
Hickory is the default by sheer numbers: 1,306 of the
1,703 drumset sticks with a stated material are hickory, and most brands build
their reference models from it. Maple is about ten percent lighter at the same
dimensions (the wood article compares published
weights). Lighter is not automatically easier, though — it is also quieter. Learn on hickory,
then move lighter or heavier once you know what you want to change.
Are lighter sticks better for beginners?
The data does not say so. The median diameter in professional use
(⌀14.7 mm) sits above the median of the catalogue as a whole
(⌀14.5 mm). Weight trades stamina against volume; it is not the same axis as
beginner-friendliness. That said, if a stick hurts your hand or you cannot swing it through,
moving thinner and lighter is a perfectly good reason.
Should I just buy 5A?
As a way of asking a shop for your first pair, it still works. But 5A is not a
standard: the 353 sticks called 5A here run from 12.7 mm to
15.1 mm in diameter. Swapping brands on the strength of the model number alone is
where it goes wrong (first article).
Are there special sticks for electronic drums?
Only 20 of the 2,110 sticks here (0.9%)
are described by their maker as being for electronic kits (Kadence, Promark, Rimshot PH, Techra).
In other words there is barely a category, and ordinary sticks are fine. Mesh and rubber
pads are hard surfaces, so wooden tips are often said to wear faster and nylon to last longer —
but no maker publishes figures for that, and neither does this site, so it stays an
impression.
I have small hands. Are there thinner, shorter sticks?
Yes. Of the 1,800 drumset sticks, 177 are ⌀13.5 mm or less,
274 are 400 mm or shorter, and 86 are both. Another
49 are described by their makers as being for children. If there is one good
reason to leave the middle band, this is it: a stick that does not fit your hand is not the
right stick, however normal its numbers look.
Which sticks break least?
We cannot answer that. No maker on file publishes a durability or lifespan figure,
and this site does not hold that data. You can rank the woods by hardness and guess, but that
is a guess, so the space is left empty.
How do cheap and expensive sticks differ?
This site does not carry prices — they move too much to keep accurate. What it can
do is line up every stick that matches your numbers, across brands, and let you pick from
there.
5. Why there is no “buy this one”
Stopping at a band rather than a model is deliberate. There are 804 sticks from 34 brands inside it, and at the first-pair stage the differences between them are not big enough to name one. Any of them is a normal pair of sticks; from there it is your hands and your taste.
Your first pair is right if it feels fine in your hands. What matters is that it becomes a reference — so write down its diameter and length. That alone changes how you choose the next one.

- Move from those numbers — thicker, thinner, lighter or heavier. Moving by millimetres instead of by model numbers keeps working when you change brand.

- What was counted: of the 2,110 sticks in STICK FINDER, the 1,800 drumset sticks that publish both a diameter and a length. Marching, concert and practice sticks are excluded — different job, different numbers.
- How the band was built: the diameter range is the interquartile range of those 1,800 sticks (14.0–15.1 mm). The length interquartile range was 406–413 mm, so the lower edge was widened to 400 mm; every count in the article uses the widened band.
- Professional use means the 2,311 artist-to-stick links collected from makers' own rosters. It leans towards brands that publish thorough lists, so the size of that lean — and the numbers without it — are given in the article.
